Art
At Idle Church of England Primary School, we believe that Art enables our pupils to express ideas, explore creativity and develop confidence in their own unique voice. Through a range of artistic experiences, children communicate their thoughts, feelings and understanding of the world in imaginative and meaningful ways.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our Art curriculum encourages pupils to take creative risks, celebrate individuality and take pride in their artistic achievements.
Our Art Curriculum
Our Art curriculum is carefully designed to build knowledge, skills and creativity over time. Pupils explore a wide range of artistic disciplines, developing both technical ability and personal expression.
We want our pupils to:
- Express ideas and experiences through creative work
- Develop confidence in using a range of artistic materials and techniques
- Explore artists, cultures and styles from different times and places
- Reflect on and evaluate their own work and that of others
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:
- Key Stage 1: Exploring materials, developing basic techniques and beginning to express ideas through art
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing greater control, using a wider range of techniques and beginning to create more purposeful outcomes
- Upper Key Stage 2: Refining skills, working independently and using art to express ideas, meaning and identity
Children learn through a range of artistic areas, including:
- Drawing
- Painting and Colour
- Sculpture and 3D Work
- Collage and Mixed Media
- Printing and Pattern
- Study of artists and visual culture
Artistic Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key artistic skills:
- Developing Ideas – exploring, planning and refining creative work
- Using Materials – working with a range of tools and techniques
- Evaluating and Improving – reflecting on and developing their work
- Knowledge of Artists – understanding and drawing inspiration from artists and styles
These skills progress from early exploration in Key Stage 1 to confident, independent creativity by the end of Year 6.
