Computing
At Idle Church of England Primary School, we believe that Computing equips our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to understand and navigate an increasingly digital world. Through computing, children develop problem-solving skills, creativity and resilience as they learn to design, create and explore using technology.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our Computing curriculum encourages pupils to use technology responsibly, think critically and develop confidence as digital citizens.
Our Computing Curriculum
Our Computing curriculum is delivered using the Teach Computing Curriculum, which provides a structured and progressive approach to learning.
We want our pupils to:
- Understand how technology works and its role in everyday life
- Develop skills in programming, creating digital content and handling data
- Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly
- Apply computational thinking to solve problems
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:
- Key Stage 1: Understanding basic computing concepts, using technology purposefully and beginning to program simple instructions
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing coding skills, working with data and creating digital media
- Upper Key Stage 2: Applying programming knowledge, exploring systems and networks, and understanding the impact of technology
Children learn through a range of computing areas, including:
- Computing systems and networks
- Programming
- Creating digital media
- Data and information
- Online safety and digital citizenship
Computing Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key computing skills:
- Programming – creating and debugging programs
- Digital Creativity – producing digital media such as images, animations and videos
- Data Handling – collecting, analysing and presenting information
- Computational Thinking – solving problems logically and systematically
- Online Safety – understanding how to stay safe and responsible online
These skills progress from simple exploration in Key Stage 1 to confident and independent use of technology by the end of Year 6.
