Music
At Idle Church of England Primary School, Music enables our pupils to express themselves creatively, build confidence and develop a love of music. Through listening, singing, playing and composing, children explore a wide range of musical styles and traditions, developing their understanding of how music can communicate ideas and emotions.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our Music curriculum encourages pupils to perform with bravery, work together in harmony and take pride in their musical achievements.
Our Curriculum
Our Music curriculum is carefully designed using Charanga, ensuring that pupils build knowledge and skills progressively over time. Through a structured sequence of listening, performing and creating, pupils develop both technical skills and creative expression.
We want our pupils to:
- Develop confidence in singing and performing
- Play instruments with increasing accuracy and control
- Compose and organise their own musical ideas
- Listen to and appreciate a wide range of musical styles and cultures
- Use musical vocabulary to describe and evaluate music
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:
- Key Stage 1: Exploring pulse, rhythm and pitch through singing, playing and simple composition
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing instrumental skills (e.g. recorder), improving control and beginning structured composition
- Upper Key Stage 2: Refining performance skills, exploring a wide range of musical styles, composing independently and using notation
Children learn through a range of musical experiences, including:
- Singing and vocal work
- Playing tuned and untuned instruments
- Listening and appraising music
- Improvisation and composition
- Performing individually and as part of a group
Musical Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key musical skills:
- Listening and Appraising – understanding and responding to music
- Singing – developing vocal technique, accuracy and expression
- Playing Instruments – using rhythm and pitch with control
- Composing and Improvising – creating and developing musical ideas
- Performing – building confidence and working collaboratively
These skills develop from early exploration and repetition in Key Stage 1 to confident, independent performance and composition by the end of Year 6.
