French
Our French curriculum is carefully designed to build knowledge, skills and confidence over time. Pupils develop their understanding of vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar while applying their learning in a range of contexts.
We want our pupils to:
- Communicate ideas and information in spoken and written French
- Develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing
- Explore language patterns and make connections between French and English
- Learn about French-speaking countries and cultures
- Use language creatively and independently
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing basic vocabulary, accurate pronunciation and simple sentence structures
- Upper Key Stage 2: Building grammatical understanding, expanding vocabulary and communicating more independently
Children learn through a range of topics, including:
- Greetings and introductions
- Numbers, dates and everyday language
- Descriptions of people, places and objects
- Food, shopping and daily life
- The French-speaking world and culture
Language Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key linguistic skills:
- Speaking and Listening – practising pronunciation and engaging in conversations
- Reading – recognising familiar words and understanding short texts
- Writing – constructing phrases and sentences using learned vocabulary
- Grammar – understanding patterns such as gender, agreement and verb forms
These skills progress from early repetition and recognition to confident and independent language use by the end of Year 6.
