Geography
At Idle Church of England Primary School, Geography helps our pupils to understand the world around them—from their local area in Bradford to the wider global environment. Through the study of places, people and environments, children develop curiosity, respect and a strong sense of their place in the world.
Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our Geography curriculum encourages pupils to explore confidently, appreciate diversity and develop a lifelong curiosity about the world.
Our Curriculum
Our Geography curriculum is carefully designed to build knowledge and skills over time. We ensure that pupils develop a strong understanding of their local area, while also exploring wider national and global contexts.
We want our pupils to:
- Understand how places and environments are connected
- Explore how human and physical processes shape the Earth
- Appreciate diversity in cultures, climates and landscapes
- Develop awareness of global issues such as sustainability and climate change
What Our Children Learn
Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression from early understanding to deeper analysis:
- Key Stage 1: Learning about the local area, the UK and the wider world
- Lower Key Stage 2: Developing understanding of physical processes and comparing regions
- Upper Key Stage 2: Exploring global systems, environmental issues and human impac
Geographical Skills
Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key geographical skills:
- Locational Knowledge – understanding where places are and how they connect
- Place Knowledge – comparing different locations and environments
- Human and Physical Geography – understanding natural processes and human activity
- Fieldwork and Enquiry – investigating the world through maps, data and real-world experiences
These skills develop from simple identification in Key Stage 1 to analysis and evaluation by the end of Year 6.
