Idle Church of England Primary School

EYFS

At Idle Church of England Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality start to every child’s educational journey. We ensure that all children receive a warm welcome, build strong relationships with staff and settle quickly into a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where they feel valued and supported.

Our Early Years provision is designed to be engaging, purposeful and inspiring, enabling children to explore, play and learn with confidence. Through carefully planned experiences, children develop independence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning.

Our Intent in EYFS

Our aim is to ensure that every child has a happy, secure and positive start to school life, building strong foundations for future learning and development. We work hard to understand each child as an individual, identifying needs early and providing support to ensure all children can thrive and make excellent progress from their starting points.

Rooted in our Christian vision of growing together through faith, learning and shared goals, we foster bravery in facing new challenges, celebrate teamwork and support children to develop positive relationships with others.

Our EYFS Curriculum

Children learn and develop more from birth to five years old than at any other time in their lives. Our curriculum is therefore ambitious, exciting and carefully designed to prepare children for Key Stage 1 and the wider National Curriculum.

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum across the seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Phonics, early reading, writing and mathematics are central to our provision, alongside a strong emphasis on understanding the world, Religious Education, PSHE, music and physical development.

Learning takes place through a balance of:

  • Child-initiated play
  • Adult-led teaching
  • Whole class, group and individual activities

Our indoor and outdoor environments are carefully designed to be stimulating and purposeful, allowing children to explore, investigate and deepen their learning independently.

How Our Children Learn

Our practice is guided by the Statutory Framework for the EYFS and underpinned by the four key principles:

  • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments
  • Children develop and learn at different rates

To support this, we:

  • Deliver a balanced curriculum covering all areas of learning
  • Plan engaging and appropriately challenging experiences
  • Use ongoing observation and assessment to inform learning
  • Provide early support and intervention where needed
  • Promote equality and inclusion for all children
  • Work in close partnership with parents and carers
  • Offer a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment

Working in Partnership

We believe that strong partnerships with families are essential to children’s success. By working closely with parents and carers, sharing information and celebrating achievements, we ensure that every child is supported both at home and at school.

Our Impact

Children leave Early Years as confident, independent and curious learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education. They develop strong foundations in communication, early reading, writing and mathematics, alongside the social and emotional skills needed to succeed.

Most importantly, children leave EYFS at Idle CE Primary School as happy, confident individuals who are ready to continue their learning journey with enthusiasm and resilience.
