English
At Idle CE Primary School, we believe reading is the gateway to lifelong learning. We strive to develop fluent, confident readers who develop a genuine love of books and reading. Through carefully chosen texts, pupils encounter different cultures, experiences and perspectives, broadening their understanding of the world and developing empathy, curiosity and imagination. Our aim is that every child leaves Idle as a reader who not only can read well but chooses to read for pleasure.
Early Reading
Reading begins with the systematic teaching of phonics through Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS). Children learn to decode confidently and accurately, building the foundations required for future reading success. Carefully matched reading books enable pupils to practise and apply their phonics knowledge until reading becomes increasingly fluent and automatic.
Our Reading Curriculum
Our reading spine sits at the heart of the curriculum. Texts are carefully selected to complement learning in history, geography, science and wider curriculum themes, whilst also exposing children to high-quality literature, diverse authors and rich vocabulary. Through whole-class reading, story time and independent reading, pupils experience a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
We want children to encounter books that challenge, inspire and provoke discussion. The carefully sequenced text spine allows pupils to revisit themes, build knowledge and make meaningful connections across subjects.
Developing Readers
hrough reading lessons, pupils learn to:
- Read fluently and with expression.
- Develop a rich and ambitious vocabulary.
- Retrieve, summarise and interpret information.
- Infer meaning from texts.
- Discuss and justify their opinions.
- Analyse an author's language and choices.
Reading is taught as a tool for learning and as a source of enjoyment.
Reading for Pleasure
We are committed to creating a culture where reading is valued and celebrated. Pupils enjoy daily opportunities to hear high-quality texts read aloud and are encouraged to develop their own reading preferences. Class libraries, the school library, book recommendations and shared reading experiences help foster a love of reading that extends beyond the classroom.
Each year group has a carefully curated Recommended Reads collection, featuring high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry appropriate for their age and stage. Pupils are encouraged to select these books as part of their reading-for-pleasure journey and work towards reading the full collection across the academic year. These texts broaden children's reading experiences, introduce them to a range of authors and genres, and help develop confident, enthusiastic readers.
Staff actively promote reading through book talk, recommendations and celebrations of reading achievements, ensuring that books remain at the heart of school life. By providing access to rich, diverse and engaging literature, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of reading in every child.
The Impact of Reading at Idle
By the time pupils leave Idle CE Primary School, they are equipped with the reading skills required to access the secondary curriculum and become lifelong readers. They can discuss books confidently, understand increasingly complex texts and appreciate the power of reading to inform, inspire and entertain.
