Physical Education

At Idle CE Primary School, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in promoting physical health, emotional wellbeing and personal development. We aim to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity by providing a broad, balanced and inclusive PE curriculum that enables every child to experience success, develop confidence and achieve their personal best.

Through high-quality teaching, competitive sport and a wide range of physical activities, we support pupils to lead healthy, active lifestyles and understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.

Our PE Curriculum

PE is taught through the PE Planning scheme, which provides a progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Children develop fundamental movement skills before applying them within a range of sports, games and physical activities.

Our curriculum includes opportunities to develop:

  • Agility, balance and coordination.
  • Teamwork and communication.
  • Leadership and sportsmanship.
  • Resilience and determination.
  • Tactical awareness and decision-making.
  • Health and fitness knowledge.

Throughout their time at Idle CE Primary School, pupils experience a wide range of sports and activities including football, tag rugby, cricket, netball, hockey, tennis, rounders, athletics, badminton, basketball, golf, dance, gymnastics, dodgeball, volleyball and orienteering.

Early Physical Development

Physical development begins in Reception, where children develop fundamental movement skills through carefully planned activities that focus on movement development, ball skills, throwing and catching, teamwork and games. These experiences provide the foundations for future sporting success and promote confidence in movement from an early age.

Reception pupils also participate in Balanceability, helping them develop balance, coordination and confidence in preparation for learning to ride a bicycle independent.

Competitive Sport and Enrichment

We believe that competitive sport helps children develop teamwork, resilience, determination and respect. Pupils are provided with opportunities to represent the school in a range of sporting competitions and festivals throughout the year.

Our extensive extra-curricular programme further enhances pupils' experiences and promotes participation beyond curriculum PE. Opportunities regularly include football, girls' football, cricket, badminton, multi-sports and other sporting activities delivered by both school staff and external coaches.

Active and Healthy Lifestyles

We are committed to helping pupils understand the importance of healthy lifestyles and regular physical activity. Through PE lessons, sporting opportunities, active playtimes and wider personal development experiences, children learn how exercise contributes positively to both physical and mental health.

Bikeability training in Year 6 equips pupils with practical road safety skills, independence and confidence when cycling within their local community.

The Impact of PE at Idle

By the time pupils leave Idle CE Primary School, they have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate successfully in a range of physical activities. They understand the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle, demonstrate good sportsmanship and resilience, and are equipped with the physical literacy needed to continue enjoying sport and physical activity throughout their lives.
