Maths

At Idle Church of England Primary School, we believe that Mathematics provides our pupils with the knowledge and skills to understand the world, think logically and solve problems with confidence. Through mathematics, children develop resilience, curiosity and a sense of enjoyment in exploring numbers and patterns.

Rooted in our Christian values of love, courage and joy, our Maths curriculum encourages pupils to persevere, take risks and develop confidence as capable and successful mathematicians.

Our Maths Curriculum

Our Maths curriculum is carefully designed using White Rose Maths, enriched by the principles of the NCETM mastery approach, to develop deep understanding over time. Pupils build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills through carefully sequenced learning.

We want our pupils to:

  • Develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Reason mathematically and explain their thinking clearly
  • Solve problems with confidence and perseverance
  • Use mathematical vocabulary accurately
  • Apply their knowledge to real-life contexts

What Our Children Learn

Our curriculum is sequenced to ensure clear progression across year groups:

  • Early Years: Building strong foundations in number, counting and early mathematical thinking
  • Key Stage 1: Developing fluency with number and beginning to reason and solve problems
  • Lower Key Stage 2: Strengthening understanding of number and applying strategies with increasing confidence
  • Upper Key Stage 2: Deepening conceptual understanding, increasing accuracy and applying maths across contexts

Children learn through a range of mathematical areas, including:

  • Number and Place Value
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
  • Geometry and Measurement
  • Statistics

Our Mathematical Skills

Throughout their time at school, pupils develop key mathematical skills:

  • Fluency – recalling and applying knowledge accurately and efficiently
  • Reasoning – explaining thinking and making connections
  • Problem Solving – applying knowledge to unfamiliar situations
  • Mathematical Thinking – using strategies, patterns and logic

These skills develop from early understanding in EYFS to confident, independent application by the end of Year 6.

How We Teach Maths

We teach maths using a mastery approach, ensuring all pupils develop a deep and secure understanding.

  • Learning follows the CPA approach (Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract)
  • Concepts are taught in small, carefully sequenced steps
  • Pupils revisit and practise key knowledge regularly
  • Daily fluency practice supports recall and confidence
  • Lessons provide opportunities for reasoning and problem solving

We also support learning at home through:

  • Numbots
  • Times Tables Rockstars
  • Maths.co.uk
  • SATs Companion (Year 6)
